In the January school holidays, I was lucky enough to be selected to attend a summer program based at Griffith University in the Gold Coast. The program, “Rock School” is a week-long course based on the main teachings of the uni course, the ‘Bachelor of Popular Music’. On the first day, all 23 of us met in the main recording room in the Queensland Conservatorium. There, we were divided into our bands which we would work with over the next three days. As well as having four theory lectures on songwriting, the ins and outs of the music industry, track recording and mixing/producing, each band had 9 hours in total to write a complete song. On the fourth day, we got the opportunity to record our songs with industry standard equipment the uni has. Imagine a Hollywood movie where they’re recording a major hit single in the fancy booths – that’s exactly what the rooms were like! Finally, on the fifth day, we got to witness our songs being professionally produced and perform them live.
My band, ‘To Be Confirmed’ ended up with our finish product being 5 minutes long and it was called ‘Sir Jackson’. This week was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life! Solid friendships were made and realistic exposure to the music industry was taught. I strongly recommend this course for passionate muso’s. To everyone, I say keep dreaming and do what you love because it’s all possible!
